Bush fires have completely destroyed six houses at Kayame, a small farming community near Tadzewu in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region. The fire which was so swift and intense, have left almost twenty (20) victims homeless because they were not available at the time of the incident to either quench the fire or salvage any single item including an amount of money totaling about One Thousand, Five Hundred Ghana Cedis (Ghc1,500.00).
The weekend’s bush fire that swept the Kayame Township, was the first of its kind in more than twenty-five (25) years. The incident happened on Friday when almost all the residents had gone to the farm to harvest some food items particularly maize.
Before the residents could say jack, a swift bush fire from nowhere swept parts of the community not only totally destroying the houses but also destroying personal effects running into several thousands of Ghana Cedis.
The victims including a 46-year old pregnant woman and a mother of six children told our newsteam that they had lost all their belongings including a lot of food items that they were harvesting.
The Assembly Member for the Devego-Dalame-Kayame Electoral Area, Mr. Emmanuel Agbotui told our newsteam in an interview that the victims have been devastated by the fire disaster. According to him, the incident was so sudden that the victims had lost all their personal effects, rendering them homeless. Hon. Agbotui said the affected residents are currently living at the premises of the Awadada of the Weta Traditional Area, Torgbui Esru IV whose palace was also nearly burnt by the fire.
Mr. Agbotui said it took a combined effort of some residents of the area and the community as well as fire service personnel from Dzodze, the Municipal Capital to bring the fire under control. Officials from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), he said were also at the community to assess the extent of damage caused to the victims and the community which is currently without electricity due to the disaster.
The Assembly Member therefore appealed for calm, stressing the need for NADMO and other individuals and organizations to urgently come to the aid of the devastated victims.
On his part, Torgbui Esru IV described the incident as bizarre and unfortunate and added his voice in appealing to government and other concerned individuals and organizations to immediately support the victims. He also appealed to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to help restore power to the community since the incident has left the community members in darkness.
The Awadada commended the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Hon. James Klutse Avedzi for donating some relief items such as plastic bowls, buckets, plates and cups to the victims. Blankets, mosquito nets and coils, sugar, rice and some cakes of soap were also given out by the MP. The Awadada appealed for further support for the victims particularly in the area of clothing and building materials.
