The Gbi Traditional Council at Hohoe in the Volta Region has declared one week of mourning for the departure of their Paramount Chief to his ancestral home. The declaration of the rites was done by the Left Wing Chief of the Gbi State and Chief of Gbi Wegbe, Togbe Keh XII at a heavily attended press conference and traditional announcement event held at Hohoe. The announcement was made on behalf of the Divisional Chief of Gbi-Kpeme, Togbe Wode IV.
The event was used to showcase some of the rich cultural and mourning rites of the chiefs and people of the Gbi State.
Hundreds of Gbi citizens, mourners as well as dignitaries from all walks of life were fully cladded in red gear to express their sorrow at the departure of Togbega Gabusu VI who reigned for twenty-nine (29) years as the Paramount Chief of the Gbi Traditional Area and President of the Gbi Traditional Council.
Togbe Keh XII who spoke on behalf of the Gbi State, also announced that all flags in the traditional area must fly half-mast during the weeklong period of mourning which ends on Saturday, 25th January, 2020. All Gbis (Gbiviwo) are also expected to observe the week in black or red cloths or uniforms in addition to going about their daily activities with sobriety. Funeral arrangements of the late Gbi Fiaga are expected to be communicated to the general public at a later date.
Togbegas Gabusu VI was known in private life as Eli Billy Bright Kormla Kumadie from the Royal Kadrake Gate, one of the three Gates of the Royal Tokoni Clan of Gbi-Hohoe. He was enstooled as Togbega Gabusu VI on May 25, 1989. His Parents were Mr. Gustav Koku Kumadie from Gbi-Hohoe and Dorothea Kpegah from Gb-Bla, all of blessed memory.
During his reign, the late Togbega Gabusu held various positions such as the President and Vice President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs as well as a Member of the National House of Chiefs. By customary practices of the Gbi-Dzigbe land, the late Togbega Gabusu also became the Divisional Chief of Gbi-Hohoe and the Chief of the Royal Tokoni Clan.
He would be remembered for his fight for all Queenmothers across the Gbi State and indeed the entire country to be gazetted to enable them perform their statutory roles in society. In May, 2013 at a workshop for Queenmothers from the southern sector of the Volta Region at Sogakope in the South Tongu District, Togbega Gabusu VI called on the Chieftaincy Ministry to ensure that all chiefs and queenmothers were appropriately gazetted. According to the statement, Togbe Wode IV, Divisional Chief of Gbi-Kpeme, would assume the position of Acting Paramount Chief of the Gbi Traditional Area and Acting President of the Gbi Traditional Council until a new Paramount Chief is enstooled.
Togbega Gabusu VI was married with seven (7) children; three (3) daughters and four (4) sons. A book of condolence has also been opened to the general public at the Gbi Traditional Council at Hohoe.
